Hi everyone,
Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Stephen Walther and I work on the Microsoft Ajax team as a Senior Program Manager.
I volunteered to drive the 2009 OpenAjax Browser Wish List. So, I'll be asking for your advice and input on the list of features that we should be asking the major browser vendors to support. What features need to be added to the major browsers to make it easier to build compelling Ajax applications?
I'm writing to you because, to make this project successful, I need your participation. What are your pain points? What features should we be asking for?
Because this is a time of accelerating browser innovation, this is a very interesting time to be assembling a wish list of new browser features. We want to use our collective influence to make sure that the major browser vendors add support for the features that we really need.
Jon Ferraiolo suggested kicking off this discussion with the following discussion points:

* We need to consider the relationship between our Browser Wish List and the new list of features being proposed for HTML 5. Does the list of new browser features proposed in HTML 5 already capture the most important new browser features? If so, instead of proposing new features, should we focus on providing a prioritization of HTML 5 features for browser vendors?

* Are there W3C recommendations outside of HTML 5 that we should be pushing browser vendors to support?

* How important is it to make browser-based applications offer the same completeness and richness as desktop applications?

* How important is Ajax running outside of the browser? For example: (a) native applications written in HTML+JavaScript instead of C, (b) mobile applications/widgets. Should future browsers support these features?

* How important is Mobile Ajax and what are the critical features needed by Mobile Ajax browsers? For example, how important are standards around Mobile Device APIs?
Over the next few weeks, I'll be collecting feedback from this list and communicating with key members in the Ajax community to gather feature requests. I want to hammer out an initial set of feature requests from you and other prominent members of the community before opening up the question to the Ajax community at large.
If you would feel more comfortable discussing your feature requests with me by phone then let's schedule a time to chat. I want to hear what you think.
-- Stephen Walther
